Saw the movie this week. I had grander expectations of the scenery so I was disappointed. I was, however, impressed by the plot. It was a romance/drama. I should have taken my wife, she is a sap for chick flicks of any kind. Instead, I took my parents. They visited Saigon recently and commented on how they had to "fake" a number of scenes. (e.g. the cafe where foreigners hung out is now closed to vehicle traffic, and the surrounding buildings have been built taller.) Needless to say, I won't be seeing movies with my parents for a while ... Correction, the movie took place before 1952. The French officially left in 1954.
Glad you got to see it Ich. I had a couple of comments from some history buffs that say the movie isn't accurate. I enjoyed it all the same: maybe it is because my own knowledge of the history is even worse.
